Course Description

The swiss school of violin making in Brienz (Geigenbauschule Brienz) was established in 1944 and is the only school in Switzerland specialising in violin making.

The four-year course of study allows students sufficient time to learn the skills that will enable them to develop individually as craftsmen and later on as professional violin makers.

Brienz is situated at the upper end of the Brienzersee Lake in the heart of Switzerland, an area of outstanding natural beauty. For centuries craftsmen have used the wood from the surrounding mountain valleys to produce fine musical instruments. The school is situated in the centre of this historic village next to the school of woodcarving (Schule für Holzbildhauerei). It houses a well-stocked library and an exhibition/music room where public events are regularly held.
